Award Winning Author Sally Nicholls Inspires Next Generation of Writers

STAGS welcomed Award winning children’s author Sally Nicholls on Thursday 2 March as part of the World Book Day celebrations. Sally crafted the fantastic book identified as this year’s ‘STAGS Reads’ entitled ‘An Island of Our Own’. This book was especially chosen by STAGS Librarians to be the one book that is recommended to the whole school each year as being the one not to miss! She delivered two talks, the first one was given in the library to specially invited guests and the Year 9 book club and the second was given to Year 7 and 8 students in the Main Hall.

Sally inspired the students by giving them a valuable insight into how she writes her books and she encouraged them to write about something they loved, because she said, “Love is the magic ingredient that makes your work come alive.”

‘Island of Our Own’ has won the Independent book sellers award and been short listed for a long list of 7 awards, namely the Carnegie Medal, Costa Book Award (Children’s category), Calderdale Book of the Year, Bolton Book Award, The Brilliant Book Award, The Guardians Children’s Friction Prize and it was long listed for United Kingdom Literacy Association Book Award. It must also be mentioned that The Sunday Times chose ‘Island of Our Own’ as their ‘book of the week’!

Sally has written a total of six successful book titles and is currently working on her next title at her home in Oxford where she lives with her husband and one year old son.
