St Albans Girls' School

Careers, Enterprise and Employability Education

Curriculum Intent and Overview
The curriculum enables students to understand and engage with the increasingly complex business world in which we live and to empower them to become informed and confident consumers, employees and gain entrepreneurial skills. In Economics the aim is to develop students’ understanding of how the local, national and global economy works through analysing economics issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life. In Business our aim is to inspire students with a life-long interest in business and current economic affairs and equip them with a greater understanding of the world around them and develop their employability complemented by extra-curricular opportunities to develop enterprise skills.

Our aim in CEIAG is to prepare young people for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult and working life.

This equips our students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes which are required to manage their lifelong career and personal development. At St Albans Girls’ School we promote equality of opportunity and put the needs of the learner above all other considerations.

Careers advice and guidance is available to all students, with careers lessons for each year group, as well as opportunities for students to ‘drop in’ to the well equipped careers room at any time.

Key Careers Events at STAGS

In addition to learning about careers in PSHCE lessons there are also specific Careers and Work Related Learning activities throughout a student’s time at STAGS. To know more about our activities please see the careers area of the website here.

Year 7: Work Shadowing

All Year 7 students have the opportunity to spend one day shadowing a family member at work so that they can learn more about the world of work

Year 9: GCSE Options

In preparation for making their GCSE option choices, all Year 9 students receive a programme of careers education in their PSHCE lessons.

Year 10 students will be given the opportunity to work with Young Enterprise and a variety of local business people to learn more about how to develop their employability skills including CVs and interview skills.  Students in Year 10 also have the chance to take part in a week of work experience in the summer term.

Year 11: Post 16 Education

To support students in choosing what route to take after their GCSEs students are given specific careers education lessons in the autumn term of Year 11.  The culmination of these lessons is a day of mock interviews when every student in Year 11 is interviewed by a local business person.

Year 11 Students are encouraged to use the time after their GCSE examinations to take part in a period of work experience that can help them towards their future career.

Sixth Form: UCAS, Apprenticeships or Work

In the summer of Year 12 students participate in a Higher Education Week.  This week provides students with a comprehensive guide to applying to university.  For those who do not wish to go to university there are also a series of workshops on how to apply for a Higher Level Apprenticeship and how to make the most of a Gap Year.

The Sixth Form Team also provide support to all students throughout Year 13 with their decision making process on what they wish to do after they have completed their A Levels.

YC Hertfordshire Lunch Time Drop-In Sessions

Students who would like access to a careers adviser can go to the lunchtime drop-in with our in school advisor Gita Patel  on Tuesdays in the P1. Alternatively if students would like to seek advice outside of school they can go to the YC Hertfordshire Centre on Catherine Street.

Students in all years, also have online access to Fast Tomato careers information site and KS4 and KS5 students also have access to Unifrog.  For students who would like some ideas on what careers best suit their personality likes and dislikes, Fast Tomato will help to provide them with some ideas.  It also provides information and videos about hundreds of different careers.

For the school’s unique login in code to set up their own account students should see either their PSHCE teacher or form tutor.

Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a real job with training so that young people can earn while they learn and achieve recognised qualifications. They take between one and four years to complete. The employer provides the on-the-job training and pays the apprentice’s wages. The young person will work alongside them and learn from some of the best in the business. The learning provider can be a college, training organisation or university, and the employer looks after the rest of the apprentice’s training. Support from a learning provider can be completed through off-the-job training on day release (attending one day a week) or over a succession of days in a short period (block-release).
