STEAM in ADT
Within the Art, Design and Technology department there are numerous opportunities for students to extend their STEAM learning experiences.
STEAM in a Box
This is a club for Year 7 students led by girls in older year groups. During the sessions the students have the chance to design and build gliders and jet propelled vehicles.
VEX EDR Robotics Club led by Year 9 Robotics Ambassadors
The VEX EDR Robotics Club is open to students in Years 7 and 8 who have a love of solving problems, coding and learning electronic engineering. Students have the chance to work with a VEX robotics kit to design a make a machine that will compete throughout the year in the nation wide VEX Robotics Tournaments.
MBDA Robot Rumble
With the support of MBDA graduate engineering mentors students in Years 8 and 9 compete annually in the MBDA Robot Rumble. Using a VEX robotics kit students design, build and code their robot to compete in various challenges against other school teams.
Rampaging Chariots with support from Leonardo
Once students are in Year 10 they further develop their robotic engineering skills in the Rampaging Chariots competition. The Rampaging Chariot is a radio controlled robot built from a kit provided by Leonardo, which is then modified and improved upon by the students. The kits were created by Leonardo engineer and famous test pilot, Peter Bennett, who designed and built the Typhoon robots featured on the television programme Robot Wars. There are four elements to the competition:
- Tug of War
- Sumo
- Assault Course
- 2-a-side Football
Coming Soon: Robotics Lab
Due to the growing popularity of robotics at St Albans Girls' School we are aiming to provide a purpose built Robotics Lab within the the ADT department that all students will have access to in their ADT lessons.
