Sustainability
At STAGS, sustainability forms a cornerstone of our values of improving the environment and taking care of the future, encompassed in our school motto, 'Nobis Cura Futura’, Ours is the Care of the Future'
We are committed to fostering sustainability through our Eco Council, where students actively engage in initiatives to reduce our environmental impact. We set high standards to encourage greener, more sustainable practices within our school community. By integrating sustainable habits into everyday life, we aim to inspire a future where students excel, thrive, and contribute to a healthier, more resilient world.
Students in every year group are actively involved in raising awareness and helping to reduce our school carbon footprint, minimise the amount of waste going to landfill, and encouraging sustainable use of resources across the school. Through regular Eco Council meetings, STAGS Bites, STAGS Talks, projects and activities, we are raising awareness of the importance and impact of our actions on our school, local and global environments.

HomeRun
HomeRun is the sustainable School Travel App that works with schools and councils to promote the reduction of our carbon footprint through limiting school run traffic and therefore creating cleaner local air quality and providing greener schools for the future.
As part of STAGS' sustainability drive, we are supporting the launch of the HomeRun App and encouraging all parents/carers to take a look at the benefits on offer:
- Access school travel information in one convenient place
- Find and arrange carpools, travel buddies, walking & cycling groups, and other available travel options to and from school
- Message parents from school securely and without the need to share contact details
- Receive updates from your school community
- Help create safer streets and cleaner air for your children

Eco Council
Led by the Year 12 Green Leaders, the St Albans Girls' School Eco Council has representatives from each form group. They meet regularly to raise awareness about issues of environmental concern and to plan actions to contribute towards improving our school-wide sustainability. Their actions also contribute to qualifying for the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.
Over the course of the last school year, the Eco Council have contributed to:
- Earth Day awareness
- Fair Trade Fortnight
- Increasing School grounds biodiversity
- Recycling initiatives
- Reducing energy consumption
- Reducing single-use plastics in school
- Sustainable St Albans
- Swap shop events
We are committed to channelling the energy of the Eco Council into many sustainable initiatives in the coming year.
STAGS ECO CODE
The Eco Council also work closely with the St Albans Girls' School Gardening Club and run the annual Inter-House Sunflower growing competition.
As a result of their excellent environmental work, St Albans Girls' School is a holder of the Eco Schools Green Flag Award and is a Fair Trade School. They are also previous winners of the Great and Green Award at the Herts Advertiser Community Awards.

"You are a fabulous example of an Eco-School and we are honored that you are part of our programme"
"You have reignited the passion and interest, making students want to be part of your success story"
In July 2025 STAGS was awarded the Eco-Schools Green Flag, with Distinction! We received some very positive feedback from the organisation that we'd like to share:
“Your greatest success was engaging pupils in Eco-Learning activities, like promoting litter-picking, which will inspire long-term Eco-action and strengthen pupils’ commitment to caring for the environment.
We loved how your school’s pupils took real ownership of reducing energy consumption, with Green Fairies and Sixth Form Green Leaders motivating positive staff and pupil behaviour, which will foster lifelong Eco-friendly habits within your school community.
We were inspired by the creative Eco-assembly for teachers and the KS3 scheme of learning on Climate Change, which clearly helps pupils develop informed perspectives and solution-driven thinking about the environment encouraging a generation of change-makers.
We loved hearing about how your pupils’ hands-on restoration of the endangered chalk stream and their collaboration with local Rangers on river bank rebuilding actively contributed to real-world environmental protection, showing the power of practical Eco-action!”
We continue to strengthen and be committed to even more sustainability projects. We want students to lead and become the climate innovators of the future. Our plans can be viewed here.
